Kuliou'ou Ridge Hike

Kuliou'ou Ridge Trail is rated on some websites as a beginner to intermediate trail. This trail is actually a combination of difficulties. The lower portion of the trail is definitely a beginner to intermediate level. But as you transition from the switchbacks to the ridge trail, it definitely gets more difficult. The real difficulty is coming back down.

The trail begins up the valley along the base of the ridge.

This sign indicates the beginning of a series of switchbacks to get you up the side of the ridge.

Snc00827

The trail is narrow and has steep drops at points.

The trail opens up about half a mile up giving you the first views of the valley.

There are many areas where you can stop to take a break or just enjoy the scenery.

As you get into the higher elevations, your hike takes you through a forest of Norfolk Pines. The ground is covered with pine needles which cushions your step but at times makes the it hard to get any traction.

Once you work your way through the Pines, a break in the foliage reveals Koko Crater.

That's a long way down. You don't want to step off the edge. This part of the path is very narrow and drops off both on the left and right.

This is where the trail becomes a climb. The terracing stairs makes it look easy but it is definitely a workout climbing these steps.

But believe me the view is worth it.

You can see Diamond Head off in the distance from this shot.

The clouds were just beginning to roll in as we reached the top.

Hmm...these guys seem to be disregarding the sign as they clearly went beyond it. Actually this is the top of the trail and the landing area is quite large up here.

When we first got up to the top, we could see all of Waimanalo, but the clouds quickly rolled in before I could click a few shots.

There is a trail that leads to this peak but apparently it's very narrow and steep.

Another zoom view of Diamond Head.

This was on the way down. I didn't see this on the way up. Almost like a doorway to heaven.

Waikiki lights

It was Jerald's last night in Honolulu so we just hung out in Waikiki. We parked at the Zoo and walked down the beach. Took a few photos along the way.
